Kingston Health Sciences Centre is a university-affiliated teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre for South-eastern Ontario. The Core Laboratory at KHSC provides comprehensive chemistry testing for the academic health sciences centre and surrounding region, and contains state of the art front-end automation and analysers.
The successful candidate for this full time permanent position will provide primarily clinical service in general and special biochemistry. Administrative service responsibilities, such as serving on departmental and hospital committees, may be assigned to the Clinical Biochemist by the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories, or Head of Department. Participation in extramural professional activities (such as service to OSCC or CSCC) is encouraged. The reporting structure for the Clinical Biochemist is through the Service Chief of the Division of Clinical Chemistry to the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories.
REPORTS TO: The Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories through the Service Chief of the Division of Clinical Chemistry at KHSC.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Your functions are to analyse and interpret clinical and laboratory data related to patient specimens such as blood or other bodily fluids. As well, you will advise clinicians on the appropriate use of tests, the diagnosis of disease, and the planning and progress of treatment. Performing and evaluating quality management of diagnostic tests, whether they are performed in the central laboratory or in a point-of-care- setting, are also expectations. You will demonstrate professionalism in your interactions with others, inside and out of the health care environment, and will maintain competence in the discipline of Clinical Biochemistry through participation in an accepted program of continuing professional development. Other responsibilities will include:
Planning and organizing work in the chemistry laboratory, collaboratively with the core laboratory manager Selecting tests to be performed in the laboratory vs. those to be referred out to an external accredited reference laboratory Defining pre-analytical conditions for testing Providing oversight of technical and clinical validation of new tests or new instrumentation Interpreting protein electrophoresis and immunofixation test results Evaluating results of internal and external quality assurance data and ensuring high performance through the monitoring of quality metrics Communicating on a regular basis with hospital-based health professionals about updates and changes in Clinical Biochemistry (e.g. newsletters, teaching rounds) Providing oversight of policy and procedure development with inclusion in technical manuals and user manual Participating in the Department’s regional outreach program Sharing responsibilities with other clinical biochemists Keeping abreast of current literature relevant to the service Providing after-hours coverage with other clinical biochemist(s)

The successful candidate will possess a Ph. D or equivalent degree, and professional certification, or be eligible for certification, as a Clinical Chemist/Biochemist (i.e. FCACB designation of equivalent).
Expertise in in biochemical genetics (e.g. inborn errors of metabolism) and or expertise in HLA tissue typing would be considered an asset.
