Research Resource Director

This newly established position will help build and supervise the operations of a new Glionoid Assay Translational Screening Research Resource. The responsibilities of this position include supervising technical staff, performing a broad range of drug screening and analysis procedures, maintaining equipment, developing standard operating and quality assurance procedures, ensuring regulatory and safety compliance, and providing intellectual contributions to project design and data analysis. Responsibilities also include evaluation, implementation and optimization of existing and emerging organoid development protocols, technologies and applications and working closely with and collaborating with research and development activities related to the cerebral organoid and glioma stem cell models in the Fine Laboratory.
- Supervises daily operations, including a broad range of protocols, instruments and sample processing, as well as data generation, analysis and archiving.
- Acts as driver for implementation of organoid and drug screening platforms. Oversees testing of existing and emerging technologies, including methods development and application optimization. Provides technical training on relevant techniques.
- Develops standard operating protocols.
- Interfaces closely with and collaborates with the academic researchers in the Fine laboratory in their efforts to continue to refine and improve the cerebral organoids and glioma stem cell model.
- Helps in the writing and creation of grants, proposals and presentations for the purpose of acquiring additional funding for the core and the academic research driving the R&D behind the core.
- Oversees maintenance of equipment and infrastructure and acts as primary liaison with equipment manufacturers and support vendors. Monitors and orders supplies.
- Determines metrics for quality assessment; creates reports on the technical status, achievements and challenges, and future plans.
- Be a primary author of document needed for City, State and Federal regulatory compliance.
- Responsible for staff evaluation and training; ensures that staff possesses appropriate credentialing and licensure and have taken all required HIPAA and other regulatory compliance courses.
- Ensures emergency back-up systems are operational and serves as a key point of contact for infrastructure and equipment emergencies.
- Coordinates analyses with other WCM laboratories or core facilities when appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related field, with a minimum of 5 years of related experience.
- Ability to troubleshoot experimental protocols and maintain meticulous records.
- Ability to supervise and motivate staff.
- Must enjoy working with others, have initiative, and be reliable.
- Attention to detail and multitasking abilities, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Must be able to write scientific documents well.
- Excellent computational and communication skills.
Skill and Abilities
- Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills with proven ability to apply creative approaches to complicated questions.
- Advanced cell culture experience.
- A record of biological and/or bioengineering technical expertise and creativity.
- Record of achievement for delivery of goals and experience in building successful relations with supervisors, peers, collaborators.
- Track record of prioritizing multiple, complex, high priority tasks.
- Demonstrated success in designing and implementing new operational procedures in partnership with other stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of team.
- Management skills appropriate for a diverse staff and high throughput environment.
- Ability to work closely with individuals from a broad range of fields, including clinical, translational and basic research disciplines.
Highly Desired Requirements
- Experience with supervising a research core facility preferred.
- Experience working in a CLIA environment.
