GENERAL DUTY DESCRIPTION: Serve as a Chief, Psychiatry at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS), Mental Health Product Line, and Psychiatry Service. In addition to patient care and supervising physicians and physician extenders, the psychiatrist may have responsibilities in other areas, such as educational and research.
The physician will provide leadership for program in an effective manner, demonstrates a high level of initiative and independence in carrying out the administrative and patient care functions. Assure compliance with clinical practice guidelines and creating systems that promote state-of-the-art chronic care. Assures that Psychiatry Service staffing and resources are adequate to meet patient needs, and is directly responsible for scheduled absences of psychiatry staff.
The Physician is responsible for providing primary, secondary, and tertiary care in both hospitalized and outpatient settings, identifying patients' mental and medical health problems and designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet these needs. Coordinate activities of other health service personnel, resolving problems affecting patient care and providing appropriate education for the patient and/or family members regarding the patient's care, patient's illnesses and its management. The care provided is to comply with clinical practice guidelines as measured by the External Peer Review Program and the Clinical Reminder reports. Provide consultations throughout the medical center, compensation and pension examinations, and tele-mental health assessments and treatments.
The staff physician is responsible for teaching house staff, medical students and other health professionals during ward rounds, clinics and in conferences and providing supervisory control and professional direction. As required, provide consultations throughout the medical center, compensation and pension examinations, and tele-mental health assessments and treatment. As required, cover other duties as assigned to include on-call coverage, holidays, weekends, and evening hours.
A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:
Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
1. Board certified or working toward board certification in Psychiatry.
2. Skill in providing patient care and in coordinating the activities of other health care providers.
3. Effective teacher for fellow staff members, house staff, medical students, and in educational programs in allied health care disciplines.
4. Demonstrated research abilities.
5. Basic Life Support (BLS).
