The position is a full-time career track position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor for a joint appointment in the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) with an academic home in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University, Pullman, WA.

We seek an individual to provide general laboratory oversight and leadership of a WADDL microbiology laboratory (molecular diagnostics, virology/immunology, bacteriology and/or immunodiagnostics) including maintaining laboratory accreditation requirements and managing staff, clinical teaching, management of the clinical microbiology residency program and outreach to clients and stakeholders.  Teaching opportunities are available depending on interest.  

This position is part of a cluster hire in clinical microbiology, emerging infectious disease/zoonotic disease research, and diagnostic medicine. This position seeks a clinical microbiologist with an emphasis (approximately 65% FTE) on clinical service, outreach and clinical training in the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) with the remaining in scholarly activity and didactic teaching (approximately 30%) and academic service (5%). Final effort distribution will be based on candidate qualifications and interest.

Faculty in the department are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in research on pathogens that cause significant disease in animals and humans, including those with potential for transmission at the human-animal interface. 



  • A DVM or equivalent.
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in the field of infectious diseases or a related field.
  • Diplomate status or board eligibility in the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM) at the time of hire are required.
  • For the Associate Professor level, evidence of scholarly productivity is required. 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in serology and/or virology and surveillance of infectious diseases.
  • Experience in veterinary diagnostic laboratory medicine and outreach.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with diagnostic laboratory collaborators, clients, clinicians, and practitioners.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with DVM and post-DVM students in a classroom or small group environment.
  • A successful record of teaching at graduate and/or professional medical levels.
  • A successful record working in interdisciplinary collaborative programs.
  • A record of scholarly productivity consistent with the level of experience and appropriate to rang (Assistant or Associate), as evidenced by a collaborative publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

This position functions in the role of public veterinary medical practice which has been identified as a veterinary shortage situation in the National Veterinary Medical Service Act (NVMSA).  Veterinarians recruited into this position may be eligible for the NIFA Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) providing up to $25,000 each year towards qualified educational loans for three years.
