The Supervisor for the Clinical Mass Spectrometry and Toxicology Laboratory provides daily technical and administrative supervision of technologists in all aspects of the laboratory involving patient care functions. This position is responsible for the daily supervision of medical technologists and directly reports to the Laboratory Director.
Under close direction of the Laboratory Director may perform several or all of the following:
Enforces laboratory policy in relation to: adherence to standardized methods of assay; discipline; schedules; safety; professional conduct; evaluation and reporting of laboratory results; preventive maintenance procedures and records; laboratory housekeeping.
Implements and enforces strict Quality Control over assigned section or units.
Reviews, edits and approves data and results generated in his/her area(s) for general correctness and analytic reliability.
Ensures that instrumentation, equipment and supplies are kept in good working order. Arranges for additional maintenance service as needed and in accordance with established laboratory policy.
Designs and conducts studies for updating of methodologies and assists in the evaluation of new instrumentation and products.
Shares responsibility with other members of laboratory staff for the final review of laboratory reports prior to release to the physician, or for inclusion in permanent medical records.
Provides proper instruction and training in laboratory procedures included within his/her section or units of operation.
Performs duties of a clinical technologist as needed.
Keeps abreast of new developments in his/her respective field of Clinical Laboratory Science.
Conducts Personnel Performance reviews. Evaluates performance of personnel for which he/she has direct responsibility in accordance with established format. Conducts Evaluation Interviews.
Plans work schedules and allocates staff.
Supervises the efficient operation of his/her section or unit(s) to assure prompt reporting of laboratory results.
Coordinates and consults with other laboratory supervisors and management personnel to insure adequate integration and synchronization of various laboratory operations.
Participates in decisions relative to hiring, transfer, promotion, termination and other personnel actions.
Candidate must have a New York State Clinical License. Preferably, candidates should have a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline with 2 – 3 years in clinical laboratories, or M.S degree or a B.S. degree with 3-5 years of relevant work experience, or bachelor degree with more than 6 years of experience in clinical laboratories.
Leadership and management skills in a high-paced working environment are essential. Excellent written and oral communication skills, the capability to work on several projects concurrently, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment are required for the position.
