Research position for a Term- Research Assistant I is available in the zebrafish laboratory that studies gene function as related to human diseases. The laboratory is located at VUMC and works with zebrafish and human cell line models. We are looking for a self-motivated, curiosity-driven person with strong enthusiasm for science and experimental work at the bench. Strong sense of personal responsibility and ability to work with a team is essential. The ideal professional background of a candidate is a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or Genetics. Practical experience with zebrafish genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and/or cell culture is a plus but is not required. Other requirements include: excellent communication skills, fluent in the spoken and written English, ability and willingness to work with live zebrafish including breeding, maintenance of baby fish and injections of freshly fertilized eggs. The bench work will include: a) molecular techniques: PCR, Isolate and purify DNA from bacteria or fish tissue, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, molecular cloning; b) histological techniques: antibody-stainings, in-situ hybridization, live staining techniques, c) microscopy. A Term position is a staff position that exists for a period longer than six months but is not expected to last beyond one year. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.
