The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and the Department of Medicine of McGill University invite applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a medical biochemist at the rank of Assistant Professor.
This position would be within both the MUHC Division of Medical Biochemistry of the Department of Medicine and the Division of Biochemistry of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine.
The MUHC Department of Medicine being a significant part of the McGill Department of Medicine clinically encompasses most of the non-surgical disciplines, and supports a large, dynamic academic program of education and research. It includes medical specialty services of the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal General Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute. With approximately 300 full time faculty organized into15 divisions, it is the largest department within the MUHC. The Department supports out-patient clinics and a number of in-patient units including four general medical clinical teaching units.
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine is responsible for the OPTILAB Montreal-MUHC laboratory cluster, one of 11 clusters established by the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services in 2017. Our cluster has 15 laboratory sites, over 160 MDs and PhDs, 900 employees and a budget close to 100 million dollars. Via 15 laboratory sites, our cluster provides both standard and highly specialized testing to 15 acute care installations (hospitals), numerous rehabilitation and long term care institutions, and overall to approximately 1.2 million inhabitants in Montreal and the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region.
This individual will join our Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Biochemistry Division, which consists of 10 Medical Biochemists and 3 Clinical Biochemists. They are responsible for the cluster’s clinical, teaching and research activities in Biochemistry
The applicant must possess expertise in Translational Medicine in the field of proteomics and knowledge of Mass Spectrometry. Other responsibilities shared amongst the team include selection, validation and implementation of new analyzers, tests and methods; development and review of biochemistry procedures and quality improvement initiatives; point of care testing; and selection and monitoring of chemistry quality control and proficiency testing programs.
The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to communicate effectively and interact with a diverse range of individuals and teams.
Through the Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Biochemistry, this individual will be encouraged to participate in direct patient care. There are opportunities to join inpatient care teams as well as develop an outpatient practice in an area of interest.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the academic mandate of both Divisions. Interest in pursuing basic or applied research is strongly encouraged especially the field of translational medicine. Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is also required.
The successful candidate will be primarily based at the Glen campus, but could supervise clinical laboratory sections at the other sites within the OPTILAB cluster.
Qualifications and Education requirements
Candidates must hold an MD degree as well as having completed a relevant fellowship in Medical Biochemistry certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent), and eligible to practice medicine in Quebec. An MSc, PhD or relevant fellowship would be an asset.
Candidates must be capable of functioning in both English and French at a professional level.
