The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratories (DCLS) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Senior Scientist in the Epidemiologic Support Group. The Epidemiologic Support Group performs testing in the areas of Molecular Subtyping, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis, Food Microbiology, conventional and molecular foodborne pathogen detection, characterization and outbreak response, and Regulatory Food Monitoring. This position will oversee the Epidemiologic Support Group’s Quality Assurance activities.
As a team leader, this position will coordinate daily customer service efforts, review analytical results, update/review SOPs, monitor all QA procedures and perform routine analysis of specimens. In addition, this position will perform method review, assist in method validation and implementation, conduct cost analysis, coordinate continuing education and maintain the Group’s competency assessment and safety programs. These duties are performed independently with minimal supervision from the group manager. Weekend, holiday and on call work may be required on a rotating schedule.
• Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience is required • Considerable knowledge and experience in theory and application of microbiology • Ability to coordinate and prioritize the work of others, and work effectively in a team environment • Knowledge of laboratory training and competency assessment of scientists in moderate to high complexity testing in microbiology • Detailed understanding of QA/QC and safety concepts and procedures in a laboratory environment • Strong verbal and written communications skills as well as demonstrated experience with computer software (word processing, spreadsheets, and laboratory information management systems) • Must have ability to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally
• A Master’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field or higher in a related field • Knowledge and experience with ISO 17025 and CLIA accreditation standards and requirements • Experience in operating autoclaves, maintaining inventory of and troubleshooting complex laboratory equipment
